What to Expect for Farm (6 & 7) this Season

The Farm divisions (ages 6 and 7) are an exciting step up for players as they transition from Peanuts to a more dynamic baseball experience. At this level, players will face coach-pitched balls for the first time, with the option to use a tee if needed. The focus is on keeping the game fun, action-packed, and full of learning opportunities. Here's what families can expect this season:

Core Concepts to Learn

  • Respect the Game: Players will continue to practice good sportsmanship, cheering for teammates, and showing respect for coaches and umpires. Hustling on and off the field will be encouraged, and players will learn to take responsibility for their gear.
  • Understanding the Game: Introduction to game fundamentals like counting outs, innings, and making simple defensive plays. Players will begin to recognize game scenarios, such as when to make a force out vs. a tag out.
  • Safety and Fun: Coaches emphasize safety with proper swinging, throwing, and baserunning techniques. Fun is the primary goal—players are encouraged to enjoy themselves while learning.

Primary Skills Development

  • Batting: Players will face coach-pitched balls during games and practice. If a player struggles to make contact, a tee will be used to ensure success and keep the game moving. Focus on building confidence and reinforcing swing fundamentals.
  • Fielding: Players will learn the basics of fielding ground balls, catching fly balls, and making accurate throws to bases. Emphasis on getting into the ready position and staying engaged in the game.
  • Throwing: Development of proper throwing mechanics with a focus on accuracy and form. Players will start practicing throwing to specific bases based on game situations.
  • Baserunning: Introduction to running through first base after a hit and advancing to the next base when possible. Players will learn to pick up base coach signals and practice tagging up on fly balls.

Game Day Expectations

  • Game Format: Games are played with coach-pitched balls, and a tee is available to ensure players can make contact if they’re struggling. This keeps the game moving and ensures every player has a chance to hit and run the bases. Games are focused on learning and fun, with lots of action to keep players engaged.
  • Time Commitment: Games and practices typically last 60-90 minutes, with a mix of instruction and play.
  • Parent Involvement: Parents are encouraged to cheer from the stands and volunteer as needed. Positive reinforcement helps create a fun and supportive environment.

Helpful Resource for Families and Coaches

The Coach Pitch 12-Week Program is an excellent guide to help coaches structure practices and games. This resource focuses on skill development while keeping the game fun and accessible for young players. Walnut Creek Little League encourages families and coaches to use this program for additional tips and strategies.

Season Goals

  • Help players transition from hitting off a tee to hitting coach-pitched balls.
  • Build confidence in batting, fielding, and throwing while keeping the game fun and full of action.
