What to Expect for Peanuts (4 & 5) this Season
The Peanuts divisions (ages 4 and 5) are where baseball fun begins! These levels focus on creating a supportive, exciting environment for kids to learn the basics of the game, build friendships, and enjoy every moment on the field. Here’s an overview of what players and parents can expect this season:
Core Concepts to Learn:
Respect the Game:
Players learn to respect their teammates, coaches, and the game itself.
Emphasizing good sportsmanship, such as cheering for others and staying positive.
Understanding the Game:
Introduction to the basics: offense vs. defense and parts of the field (infield, outfield, bases).
Focus on making plays at first base and knowing when outs occur.
Safety and Terminology:
Dugout safety rules and proper use of equipment.
Key phrases like “ready position,” “swing zone,” and “alligator chomp” to help players remember mechanics.
Primary Skills Development:
Batting:
Learning where to stand at the plate and understanding the basics of a balanced swing.
Focus on keeping “nose and toes” aligned when stepping and swinging.
Fielding:
Players practice getting into the defensive ready position.
Emphasis on keeping fingers up when catching and using the “alligator chomp” for ground balls.
Throwing:
Simple mechanics with a focus on aiming for first base.
Introduction to the “Feed the Giant” technique (step, throw, point).
Baserunning:
Learning to run counterclockwise around the bases.
“Station-to-station” running, ensuring players move base-by-base safely.
Game Day Expectations:
Game Format:
Games are designed to be fun and instructional. Scores are typically not tracked at this level to keep the focus on development rather than competition.
Time Commitment:
Games and practices usually last around an hour, making it manageable and enjoyable for young players.
Parent Involvement:
Parents are encouraged to be involved by helping in the dugout, cheering from the stands, or volunteering with the league.
Helpful Resource for Families and Coaches:
The
Little League Tee Ball Program
is a fantastic resource filled with practice plans, activities, and tips to make the season successful. Whether you’re a new coach or a parent who wants to support their player, this guide helps foster skill-building while keeping the game fun. Walnut Creek Little League incorporates many of these best practices to make the Peanuts season engaging and exciting.
Season Goals:
Foster a love of the game and encourage teamwork.
Build confidence by celebrating small wins—catching a ball, making a good throw, or simply having fun!
Create a safe and positive environment where every player feels encouraged to try their best.
Peanuts baseball is all about the joy of learning and playing, creating memories that will last for seasons to come!
