Raptors Edge Out Creek Monsters For 2021 Baseball Season Triple A Title
Led by Manager Matt Keeperman and Coaches Pat Beauchemin and Jay Langraf, The Raptors defeated the Creek Monsters 17 to 15 in a hard fought battle for the Triple A title.
After going 2-0 in the playoffs the Raptors reached the championship with two hard fought victories. The Creek Monsters, after losing their second game of the tournament, arrived in the final having won three straight and needing to beat the Raptors twice.
The Creek Monsters had played A LOT of baseball over the past week and you would have expected them to possibly come out a little lethargic and tired but that wasn't the case. In the top of the first inning, they immediately put together a rally and notched 3 runs.
The Raptors bats got going in the bottom of the first and they responded with four runs of their own.The hitting continued for both teams in the 2nd and 3rd innings. The Raptors were able to scratch out a three run lead heading to the 4th.
The Monsters would not quit and kept on swinging and swinging. They put across 5 runs in the top of the 4th and grabbed a two run lead. To the Raptors credit their lineup responded in the bottom of the 4th and the Raptors put up 5 runs of their own.
The game went into the 5th inning with the Raptors holding a 16-13 lead. While offense for both was the story for innings 1-4 it was the defense that shined the rest of the way.
After a single to start the inning, big plays from the Raptors kept the Monsters from another big inning. With a runner on third and nobody out, the Monsters batter laced a long drive to center. Off the bat it had the look of a home-run and the Raptors lead would be just one. However the Raptors' center fielder went back on the ball, reached above his head and snagged the ball as he went tumbling over for the 1st out of the inning. The runner on third tagged up and scored to make it a two run game. Two batters later a slow roller in front of the plate was pounced on by the Raptors' catcher and his throw to first was corralled out of the dirt by a stretching first baseman for out #2. The Raptors closed out the 5th inning only giving up one run.
The Raptors got the run back in the bottom of the 5th and the game headed into the top of the 6th with the Raptors protecting a 3 run lead.
After a lead off walk the Raptors pitcher settled down and got two strikeouts. Down to their final out, the Monsters were not going to go quietly. The batter launched a shot towards right center only for the Raptors center fielder to come gliding over and make the catch. It was a fitting way to end the game with the batter making great contact and the defense making a great play.
Congratulations to Luke B, Oliver B, Joey D, Andrew K, Drew L, Luke L, Luke M, Oliver N, Dylan S, Mason T, Weston T and Yo-Lin T on a great 2021 Baseball Season!
